Seeing these little babies ready for the garden is a welcome sight! What a long, cold winter it was … and the earth has finally warmed enough to start planting.

The Harvard Farmers’ Market will open for its fifth season in just a couple of months – on Saturday, August 13. Applications have been rolling in and Market Managers are busy planning for the season. Shoppers will find many familiar faces, as well as some fabulous new ones.

Two new vendors who will be joining us are Samira’s Homemade and Lawton’s Family Farm. Samira’s will bring hummus, tabouli, babaganoush, grape leaves and olives, and Lawton’s will be selling cheese. Yum!!
If you’d like to become a vendor, please go to the ‘vendor’ link and you’ll find our application and contract. Jen or Lisa can assist new vendors who’d like
to come on board; please email us at Jen or Lisa.

If you are a backyard farmer and would just like to participate occasionally (with that huge bumper crop of tomatoes, for example) just drop us a note and we’ll tell you how you can join us.

As always, we welcome volunteers with open arms … please contact our Volunteer Goddess Amy Sklar if you can lend a hand.

Don’t miss Food Fight, a documentary next Friday night (Friday, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m) in the Unitarian Fellowship Building.

Food Fight looks at how American agricultural policy and food culture developed in the 20th century, and how the California food movement has created a counter-revolution against big agribusiness.

Food Fight is the first of three films about food in a community film series sponsored by the UU Green Sanctuary Committee, Harvard Local, the Harvard Farmers Market, and the Congregational Church of Harvard. A $5 donation is suggested to cover the cost of the movie. Students are free.

Kids Weekend 2010 – Get Growing & Farmer for a Day This Weekend

After the success and popularity of the kids weekend in 2009, we are once again hosting a couple of events to encourage bright young farmers and gardeners.    The Get Growing Contest 2010 will be back again on September 18th (see the Categories Below).

Get Growing is open to all ages. Have your submissions on the tables at the market (right by the HFM market Managers tents) by 11:00. Judging will begin at 11:05am and Ribbons will be awarded at 11:45am. (Ribbons will be awarded to all who participate.) Originality counts as much as horticultural prowess….so don’t just get get growing, but also, get creative!

In addition to the growing contest, all school aged children are invited to join the market as vendors in our Farmer for a Day Program.  There is no charge for kids to be a vendor for this one weekend, and kids are welcome to sell items that they have gardened or produced (no crafts).  If you are interested in participating, please email Rochelle Greayer with questions and to reserve a space.
